Nano Coatings for Historic Buildings and Heritage Structures

Historic stone, masonry and metal facades face constant weathering. Moisture, frost, biological growth and air pollution work into the surface over years, causing staining, spalling and structural deterioration. Conventional coatings make this worse by trapping moisture inside the substrate. Vetro Power nano coating forms a transparent, vapour-permeable protective layer directly on the substrate. The surface continues to breathe. Water ingress, soiling and biological colonisation are blocked. Appearance and texture are unchanged.

Vetro Power coatings are applied on listed buildings, government monuments, temples, war memorials, heritage railway stations and colonial-era facades across India, the UAE, the UK and Australia. Available in concentrated form for large-scale conservation projects.

Substrates Treated

MaterialTypical Application
LimestoneChurch facades, civic buildings, carved stonework
SandstoneColonial-era government buildings, temples, fort walls
MarbleMonuments, mausoleums, decorative stonework
BrickVictorian and colonial-era building envelopes
Rendered masonryPlastered facades, stucco surfaces
ConcreteHeritage structures, precast panels
IronRailings, structural ironwork, ornamental castings
BronzeStatues, plaques, memorial tablets
SteelHeritage bridges, industrial structures

What Changes. What Stays the Same.

What the coating deliversWhat the coating preserves
Water repellency: rain and moisture bead off the surfaceSurface colour and tone: no darkening, whitening or gloss change
Vapour permeability: moisture trapped inside can still escapeSurface texture: rough, polished or carved profiles are unchanged
Anti-soiling: airborne dirt and pollutants do not adhereSubstrate breathability: the building envelope continues to regulate moisture
Biological resistance: moss, algae and lichen growth is inhibitedMaterial patina: existing weathered character is not stripped or altered
Frost protection: water cannot penetrate to cause freeze-thaw spallingStructural integrity: no solvent attack, no swelling, no blistering

Application Steps

  1. Surface preparation Inspect and clean the substrate. Remove loose material, biological growth and any existing contaminated or film-forming coatings. Allow to dry completely.
  2. Condition assessment Identify spalls, cracks and voids. Apply any required consolidant or repair mortar and allow to cure fully before coating.
  3. Apply the coating Apply Vetro Power nano coating by brush, roller or low-pressure spray. The product penetrates into the substrate rather than forming a surface film.
  4. Cure Allow to cure before rain exposure. Final performance is reached within 24 hours under normal temperature conditions.

Project Types

Project typeTypical requirement
Listed and protected buildingsBreathable, invisible protection that does not compromise the substrate or alter its character
Government monuments and memorialsLong-term protection against soiling, biological growth and graffiti on high-visibility structures
Religious structuresProtective treatment for temples, churches and mosques without altering sacred stonework
Heritage railway stationsFacade protection across large surface areas including mixed stone, brick and ironwork
Colonial-era buildingsTropical climate performance: humidity, monsoon and UV resistance on porous substrates
War memorials and statuesAnti-graffiti and anti-soiling protection on bronze, stone and rendered surfaces

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the coating change the appearance of the stone?
No. Vetro Power heritage coatings are formulated to be transparent. They do not alter surface colour, tone or texture. The treated surface looks the same as the untreated one.

Can moisture trapped inside the wall still escape?
Yes. The coating is vapour-permeable. Unlike film-forming coatings that seal the surface and trap moisture, Vetro Power coatings allow water vapour to pass through from inside. This is essential for historic buildings where moisture management is as important as water exclusion.

Is the coating reversible?
The coating bonds to the substrate at a molecular level rather than forming a removable surface film. For conservation work where full reversibility is a project requirement, contact Vetro Power to discuss the specific substrate and conservation brief.

What happens to existing moss or algae before application?
Biological growth must be treated and removed before the coating is applied. The coating then inhibits re-colonisation. Vetro Power Porous Stone Protect with High Performance Moss Prevention is available specifically for substrates prone to biological growth.

Can it be applied to wet or damp stone?
No. The substrate must be thoroughly dry before application. Applying to damp stone prevents proper penetration and bonding.

Is it safe to use on carved or decorative stonework?
Yes. The product is applied by brush or low-pressure spray and does not require rubbing or abrasive contact. Fine carved detail is not affected by the application process.

Does it protect against graffiti?
VP Nano-Dynamis Anti-Graffiti Coating is specified for graffiti-resistant treatment on heritage structures. It can be applied to stone, brick, concrete and metal. Graffiti is removed without solvent damage to the substrate underneath.

Can it be used on iron and bronze alongside stone in the same programme?
Yes. VP Metal Protect is specified for iron and bronze elements. Both products can be applied in the same treatment programme, covering mixed-material facades in a single pass.

Is there a product suited for large-scale conservation projects?
Yes. A concentrated version of Vetro Power Porous Stone Protector is available for large-scale conservation work, allowing cost-effective coverage of extensive surface areas.
