From Design to Durability: Nanocoatings Gain Traction Across India's Hotels and Infrastructure

As India's hospitality, aviation, and infrastructure sectors expand, attention is moving beyond how a space looks to how well its materials hold up over time. The Morning Voice reports that nanotechnology surface protection is becoming a central part of that shift, with Mumbai-based Zyax Chem, led by Managing Director Varun Mukhi, driving the change through non-toxic, PFOA-free coatings built for Indian conditions. Its surface protection arm, Vetro Power Advanced Material Care, has seen adoption across luxury hotels, public infrastructure, and cultural landmarks.
Properties such as Taj Lands End, St. Regis, Sofitel Mumbai, and Four Seasons Mumbai, along with infrastructure projects like Kempegowda International Airport and institutions including the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre, use the coatings to preserve high-value surfaces. Unlike conventional treatments, the nanocoatings form ultra-thin, breathable layers on fabric and upholstery, stone and glass that repel liquids and resist stains without altering appearance. Studies show water contact angles up to 160° and absorption reductions of nearly 88%.
Users report reduced cleaning frequency, lower chemical use, and a longer lifespan for furnishings, marble, and glass, reflecting a broader shift toward preventive maintenance. "The aim is to build resilience into materials from day one," Varun Mukhi said, pointing to India's particular climate and usage demands.
The trend tracks strong sector growth. The World Travel and Tourism Council estimates the sector contributed over Rs 22 lakh crore to GDP in 2024, while rising infrastructure investment is lifting demand for durable, low-maintenance materials. Industry observers expect nanotechnology surface protection to help reduce lifecycle costs and improve sustainability through lower water and chemical use.
